Bill Foster: Businessman, Scientist, Independent Solutions

Foster for 11th District, Congress

By The Daily Herald Editorial Board

It’s hard to imagine a more diverse mix of candidates than that facing Democratic voters in the 11th Congressional District: a West Aurora school board member born and bred in the district who bills himself as the only true progressive in the field (Juan Thomas); an Orland Park Fire Protection District president who emphasizes his working class roots (Jim Hickey); a former congressman with a reputation for independence and moderation seeking a return to Washington, D.C., after being ousted in a nearby district during the conservative uprising in 2010 (Bill Foster). We favor Foster. Thomas has an infectious passion and a special talent for articulating his ideas on national health care, controlling Wall Street excesses and remaking the federal tax structure. But in spite of promises to “sit down with my Republican colleagues,” his rhetoric suggests a strong potential for polarizing debate. Hickey makes a good case for a homespun, solutions-oriented approach to government, but he’s lacking in the kinds of experiences that can make an effective congressman. Foster, of Naperville, whom we’ve supported in the past, is a blend of his opponents’ best qualities without their baggage. He is a strong advocate for social needs but a consistent voice for controlled spending and sound budgeting. He would make an intriguing option in the November campaign. The 11th District runs from North Aurora to south of Joliet, taking in parts of Naperville, Bolingbrook and other communities.
