Naperville Central grad organizes gun violence protest in city's downtown

A recent graduate of Naperville Central High School organized a protest against gun violence Saturday in downtown Naperville.

Anusha Kumar gathered about 50 protesters, including a number of elected officials, by the World War II memorial downtown on Washington Street, said Michelle "Mimi" Cowan, a Democrat on the Will County Board.

The crowd chanted "enough is enough," "no more guns" and "end the violence now," as multiple cars drove by and honked in support, Cowan said.

The elected officials including state senators, state representatives, Naperville city councilmen and Democratic U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, according to Cowan.

Some of them talked about the possibility of banning assault weapon sales in Naperville, Cowan said, while also recognizing that without federal intervention, guns can cross state lines.

The protest comes four days after a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers were killed by a gunman.
